The 28-year-old was finally back on the pitch as the Viola beat Benfica on penalties in the International Champions Cup.

“Taking tackles and getting knocked on the field is useful,” he said after the game, in an interview with Radio Bruno Toscana. “We're making progress.

“Now we have a few days off, then we'll start working again in Florence.

“We held together well today, I'm happy for my teammates, in particular for [Luca] Lezzerini, who blocked the last penalty.”

Rossi was subbed off the pitch in the second half to make sure he would not get hurt, a matter which frustrated him.

“I was feeling fine, I'd have liked to have played even more.

“But we're going ahead with a cool head, this is only the beginning.”
