Now his former club is eager for a reunion, just six months after the €14m transfer.

“Anything is possible,” CSKA Moscow director general Roman Babaev told championat.com.

“At this moment, Roma’s position on the matter is categorical. They will only sell him out right. Few teams are prepared to invest such a huge sum for a player.

“It’s difficult to predict how the situation will evolve. We are considering every option that can reinforce the squad at a reasonable cost.”

CSKA assistant manager Viktor Onokpo had also commented on the Doumbia reunion.

“It is necessary to wait for the forward to sign the paperwork, but we are in negotiations. In any case, it’s a bit early to say he is a CSKA player again, but we can say there is foundation to the rumours of a possible return.

“Doumbia wants to come back, but he has a long contract with Roma.”
