Paulo Sousa is “working to find the right alchemy” at Fiorentina to challenge the big clubs.

The former Basel Coach is making his Serie A debut as a tactician, though he already played in this League for Juventus.

“We are working to find the right alchemy, which is necessary to compete at a high level with clubs who have much more spending power,” Sousa told Sky Sport Italia.
“We must try to get to know each other well and put all that quality on to the pitch. This sense of belonging is important not just for me, but for the lads.”

Fiorentina would’ve had a stronger squad this season had Mohamed Salah not vetoed an extension of his Chelsea loan.

“I only want to talk about the players who are here,” shrugged Sousa.

“The club is working on the market and we want to be competitive in every sector. We also intend to have diversity in the characteristics of players in each role.”

Giuseppe Rossi is almost ready for his comeback after another serious knee injury, while Mario Gomez is in need of a confidence boost.

“Rossi is practically doing all the training work and we’ll certainly see him in action soon. He’s a very intelligent player, knows the spaces well and is technically excellent. His movements are good, which is why he can play alongside anyone.

“We cannot put Gomez under pressure, as he has an extraordinary past and an equally impressive present and future. He is a player of the highest level.”

The last Portuguese tactician in Serie A was Jose Mourinho at Inter, so are there comparisons to be made?

“I want to be myself and think for everyone it is important to remain consistent with their own personality. Mourinho is a winner, I work to win every day and hope to one day reach the targets he has achieved.”
