It’s reported Silvio Berlusconi personally decided to renew the contract of Milan defender Philippe Mexes.

It was announced earlier today that the Frenchman had signed a one-year extension to his deal with the Rossoneri, with his previous contract having expired at the end of June.

The move came as something of a surprise, with reports suggesting that the player is not part of Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic’s plans for next season.

Gianluca Di Marzio’s website reports that club President Silvio Berlusconi was behind the decision, renewing Mexes’ deal and then calling Mihajlovic to convince him it was the right thing to do.

The Serbian Coach wants Alessio Romagnoli, having worked with the player at Sampdoria last season, but parent club Roma are demanding €30m for the 20-year-old.

The renewal of Mexes does not necessarily mean Romagnoli will not arrive, but Di Marzio states that Milan have no intention of paying the full €30m.
