French defender Philippe Mexes has reportedly been told his Milan contract will not be renewed.

It had previously been thought that the centre-back would be handed a one-year extension to his deal, at the behest of club President Silvio Berlusconi.

However, Corriere della Sera reports this morning that the Rossoneri have informed Mexes’ agent that he will not be offered a new contract, with his old deal having expired on June 30.

Gazzetta dello Sport also reports the defender will leave, with Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic making it clear he is not part of his plans.

The news comes despite Diavolo fans hanging a banner outside Milanello yesterday stating ‘Philippe Mexes, one of us’.

The Frenchman arrived on a free transfer from Roma in 2011, but attracted controversy due to his poor disciplinary record.
