Mirko Valdifiori’s agent admits he “lied” about negotiations after the Empoli midfielder signed for Napoli. “They wanted him at all costs.”

Today the 29-year-old passed his medical and put pen to paper on a four-year contract, though until yesterday his representative had continued to suggest a move to Torino was more likely.

“The truth about him was never really told in the media, above all by me,” confessed Mario Giuffredi on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“Some negotiations have to be done in secret. My work is to do what is best for the players. Valdifiori is like a son, as I got him three years ago and was able to take him to my hometown club.

“He also plays for the Nazionale, so all this has been immensely satisfying.”

Giuffredi confirmed Valdifiori will wear the Number 6 jersey at Napoli and signed a four-year contract.

“He said clearly yesterday that Napoli was his destiny. I had the first contact with President Aurelio De Laurentiis on March 24 and he told me that he wanted to sign Valdifiori.

“From that moment on, I didn’t talk about it to anybody, not even my own collaborators. De Laurentiis was very open to us.

“Recently the situation got a little complicated, but he proved that he wanted the player at all costs and resolved every problem.”

The issue was a clause in the contract allowing Napoli to sell Valdifiori after two years to any club, even without his consent.

That clause was removed after the agent and midfielder complained.

“This is the happiest day of Mirko’s life. I think it can be compared to the day your child is born – that should tell you how important this is for us.

“The negotiations were also very complex and in recent days there was a lot of work to be done.”
