The President broke his silence by speaking to Rai Sport during Italy’s 1-0 friendly defeat to Portugal in Geneva.

He was asked about new Coach Maurizio Sarri, who arrives from Empoli after Rafa Benitez took over at Real Madrid.

“We must begin again from an all-Italian Napoli. I put that idea into my head after a few feelers were sent out, confirming several overseas players wouldn’t accept the Europa League. It meant we had to start again from a healthier provincial approach.

“We believe in our young players and know they can grow.”

An Italian who was playing tonight and could well be at Napoli next season is Sampdoria midfielder Roberto Soriano.

“Do I like Soriano? I like many players, including him. At this moment we are completely revamping the squad.”

De Laurentiis was asked about the new cash influx at Milan with Thai investor Bee Taechaubol, but his reply was shocking.

“I am not worried by foreigners investing in Italy. I am worried by the balance sheets of our clubs. (FIGC President Carlo) Tavecchio told me probably only three clubs as of today can register for the Serie A season.

“As good Italians, we always have to plug the holes and keep afloat somehow. The way the tournaments are set up may well be all wrong, so the time has come for the Lega to change.”
