Mauro Icardi is joint Capocannoniere with Luca Toni on 22 goals and admits “I did not expect to be up there.”

The 22-year-old is the youngest top scorer since Paolo Rossi aged 21 in 1978, on a par with Verona striker Toni who at 38 is the oldest.

“I honestly did not expect to be up there. I take it one game at a time to do better, then the team worked for me and allowed me to score so many goals.

“At my age this is a great achievement,” Maurito told Sky Sport Italia after a 4-3 victory over Empoli.

The last Inter players to be Capocannoniere were Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Vieri.

“We had to win this game to end the season well at San Siro. Next year we can build on this and I am sure we will do well with the Coach. We’ve been working for a few months now and pre-season training will help us further understand his ideas.

“Everyone wants to play in Europe, but I have always said I’m happy at Inter and next year will already be a great campaign."

The Argentine has been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid, as contract renewal talks are dragging on.

“I’ve been saying for a year that I want to stay here. We are talking to the club, I am optimistic and believe we’re already at an advanced stage.”
