Italy Under-21 Coach Gigi Di Biagio warned “there are too many foreign players, so our choices are limited.”

The tactician spoke at a seminar in the Coverciano training ground and looked towards the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“It is an important competition and we want to finish in the top four of the European Championships so we can qualify for Rio.

“Players care more about the Olympics than they used to and many I visited confessed to me it was their dream.”

Di Biagio revealed he and senior Italy Coach Antonio Conte are finding it increasingly difficult to pick a squad.

“Over the last two years I had few choices in attack, but we’re all sorted in defence with lads like Davide Zappacosta, Matteo Bianchetti, Cristian Biraghi and Daniele Rugani.

“Up front we’ve really only got Andrea Belotti and Marcello Trotta.

“Unfortunately, we are penalised by the sheer number of foreign players in our youth academies. Conte and I often ended up watching a game without a single Italian, asking ourselves what we were even doing there.

“We just have to accept it and work with the material we have.”
