The Viola kept themselves in the running for European qualification with a 3-2 win at the Stadio Castellani.

“With quality, sacrifice and hunger we got the better of Empoli with a deserved success,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I was particularly eager to get this result, as the team deserves fifth place and it was fundamental to get the three points today.

“We struggled a little at the end, above all for the centre-backs. Mohamed Salah scored a great goal and he has these unpredictable tricks. From January he gave us something more in our finishing and allows us to take play in different ways, which is what we needed.

“Josip Ilicic is doing great things and over the last few months showed strength to win back his place. He is improving in terms of consistency, while we already knew his quality.”

Now Fiorentina must prepare for a mission impossible against Sevilla, having lost the Europa League semi-final first leg 3-0.

“A Coach has to resist the emotional tension of criticism. I think the team did not deserve such a heavy defeat.

“On Thursday we will above all need great inner belief, the fans pushing us on and a bit of luck. It is my duty to transmit my belief to the team.

“It will be a huge task, but I believe we can do it against Sevilla.”
