On Friday UEFA imposed Financial Fair Play sanctions on Roma, awarding a fine of at least €2m – possibly as much as €6m if the accounts are not put in order – and limiting their European squad to 22 players.

“It is not a Sword of Damocles hanging over us,” Baldissoni told Sky Sport Italia.

“Over the last few days we terminated a transition phase that we knew we’d have to face. This is a club that has posted losses for several years and we had to begin again.

“In truth, we’re happy with the ruling, because UEFA were able to appreciate the work we’ve done so far.”

Nainggolan starts tonight at San Siro, but his future is up in the air amid Premier League interest.

The Belgium international is co-owned between Roma and Cagliari.

“We like him, but other sides like him too. He is in a co-ownership arrangement with Cagliari and there is nothing strange in what’s happening. We are going through the usual process with them and our intention is to keep him.”
