Torino Coach Giampiero Ventura felt bad for Daniele Padelli, but confessed the howler against Empoli “affected us psychologically.”

The game was only three minutes old when the goalkeeper accidentally kicked the ball into his own net when controlling a back-pass, but that proved the decisive moment in a 1-0 home defeat.

“It had never happened to me before, but it was just an incident. It’s a shame for us and for Padelli, who until now had done good things,” Ventura told Sky Sport Italia.

“In football the only people who don’t make mistakes are the ones who don’t play.

“It’s true the mistake affected us psychologically, but there was still a reaction against an Empoli side in better shape than us.

“We have an extra 15 games played this season and in this heat they start to weigh on you. There was the possibility to equalise, but we can only accept the defeat.

“A victory would’ve put us on a par with Sampdoria, so in the remaining four games we have to win both on home turf and win the play-off with Genoa.

“Considering the many head-to-head fixtures coming up, I think three wins and a draw could be enough to continue our European dream.”
