Walter Sabatini admitted Roma must “get accustomed to this new reality” of fighting for third place.

The 2-1 defeat to Inter tonight means if Napoli beat Sampdoria on Sunday night, the Giallorossi will be only two points clear of fourth place.

“Evidently not getting into the Champions League would be a failure,” confessed the director on Sky Sport Italia.

“Now we have to press the reset button and get accustomed to this new ‘reality’ – new for us as we were first or second for 70 rounds in a row.

“Mind you, the performance itself gave some positive signs going forward.”

A major problem appears to be the lack of goals from their strikers, as only Francesco Totti is finding the net with any kind of regularity.

“There’s no need to pull out statistics – it is a problem of the entire squad and it seems ungenerous to blame one particular section.

“The whole team needs to find its focus and go back to winning games. I’m sure they will.

“We have a game on Wednesday against Sassuolo, where we need to repeat or improve upon tonight’s performance with fewer errors.

“There is no need for a trial. We’ve already had our internal investigation, so we know where we got it wrong and what we need to do.”

There were reports this week that Roma do not intend to offer Totti a contract renewal, effectively forcing his retirement in June 2016.

“The situation is very clear. He has one more year on his contract and we are waiting for Francesco to tell us how he is feeling and what he wants to do. Only he can dictate his future to us.”
