Today the German Coach announced he would be leaving Borussia Dortmund on July 1, terminating his contract three years early by mutual consent.

Although the Premier League seems to be the favourite destination, Serie A is not to be under-estimated either.

Napoli had already approached Klopp when Walter Mazzarri left two years ago, as confirmed by President Aurelio De Laurentiis in May 2013.

“It’s true I spoke to Benitez, but I also heard from Andre Villas Boas and Roberto Di Matteo, Manuel Pellegrini and even Klopp.

“Klopp told me he was under contract until 2016. I also talked to Laurent Blanc and Didier Deschamps, who took Juventus back into Serie A.”

The German tactician also admitted there had been an offer on the table from the Partenopei in September 2013, when Borussia Dortmund played a Champions League game at the Stadio San Paolo.

“It’s all true, Napoli did want me. It’s incredibly exciting for me to play in Diego Maradona’s stadium.”

Benitez will be out of contract in June and it has become abundantly clear neither side wants to continue the rapport beyond this season.
