Stefano Pioli warned Lazio “it’s not over yet” after flying past Roma into second with a 4-0 demolition of Empoli.

The Aquile celebrated an eighth consecutive Serie A victory that took them into second place, surpassing city rivals Roma.

“Rudi Garcia is right, this is not the final result. We must be satisfied with our current position and our performance against a difficult Empoli side, playing in the heat after the Coppa Italia midweek.

“Of course this streak means something, but we only got here by taking it one game at a time and we mustn’t let go of that approach until the end of May.

“The team knew this was the most important week to really prove our maturity. We won the Coppa Italia semi-final and the fans welcomed us back at 2am, so a normal team could easily slip into complacency.

“Luckily, my team is not normal. I have so much quality and such players of character that they didn’t let it get to them.”

Diego Novaretti was sent off for an extremely harsh second bookable offence, as he appeared to pull out of the challenge on Mario Rui.

“It was absurd and I’ve not seen a card like that for a while. It’s a pity, as the assistant referee was right there.”

“Unfortunately Stefan de Vrij and Marco Parolo picked up injuries today. We’re waiting for the test results, but if others are called upon then they will certainly give the right response.

“I always believed in this squad and that if all the components worked together, we would do well. It’s still too early to talk, as there are eight rounds to go and the Coppa Italia Final.

“I keep telling my players we must get the maximum of our potential, but we don’t know what that is yet. If the campaign ended today then we could celebrate, but it doesn’t and therefore we have to remain concentrated.”

Miroslav Klose had seemed to be on the fringes of the side, but has been decisive in recent rounds.

“If there is mutual respect, then there can never be problems. Of course Klose wasn’t happy with his playing time at the start of the season and wanted to give his contribution, but he sets the example for his hard work, professionalism and joy. He’s a champion through and through.”
