The Nerazzurri lost the first leg 3-1 in Germany and were also beaten 2-1 at San Siro to crash out of the Europa League.

“We knew they would wait to hit us on the counter,” the captain told Inter Channel.

“We had the chances to take the lead straight away, but then it all became more difficult after their goal.

“We knew they would wait to hit us on the counter,” the captain told Inter Channel.

“We had the chances to take the lead straight away, but then it all became more difficult after their goal.

“They made the most of their opportunities and we did not, while their goalkeeper also performed some great saves.

“We are disappointed because we really believed that we could qualify and had prepared well for this game.”

The fans jeered as time went on and many walked away before the final whistle.

“I hadn’t seen the stadium so full in a while and stepping on to the pitch gave me goosebumps,” continued Ranocchia.

“The supporters were fantastic and it’s a shame, as once again we are here talking about a defeat.

“We are all disappointed, but what’s done is done. From tomorrow we’ll focus on Sampdoria and there’s a long way to go in Serie A.”
