“It is an extremely important game and we are fighting it out for position in Serie A,” said Montella in a Press conference.

The Viola will inevitably start to suffer from fatigue, as they are in the Coppa Italia semi-final and Last 16 of the Europa League.

“This is modern football, it is your duty to play many games in a season. I will pick the best line-up to beat Milan and evaluate the individual players.

“In truth, we have few options, as Stefan Savic, David Pizarro and Mario Gomez are out. However, I don’t want alibis or complaints about tiredness. We are beyond that and have to prove we’re a great team.”

Milan only have Serie A to worry about and are still struggling badly, fumbling a lead to draw 2-2 with Verona at the 95th minute last week.

“Milan are a prestigious club,” warned Montella. “They were going through a crisis last season and still managed to beat us.

“They have important players like Jeremy Menez and Alessio Cerci who can cause problems for us with their characteristics.”

Montella has been heavily linked with the Rossoneri bench for next season, as Pippo Inzaghi is under fire.

“In order to become a Coach, it is important to go through the journey. Perhaps people expected more from him, but maybe having a difficult start can be an advantage going forward.”

Alberto Gilardino could get his first start since arriving from Guangzhou Evergrande in January, facing his former club.

“Gila is very motivated and lives for the goal. I haven’t started him so far because I didn’t consider him suited to that type of match. He remains an important resource for us.”
