Gian Piero Gasperini admits Genoa’s 2-0 home defeat to Chievo was “frankly unexpected.”

Alberto Paloschi bagged a brace against his former club and ended the Grifone’s five-match unbeaten run.

“We never really thought of going for third place, but either way this was an ugly setback,” Coach Gasp told Rai Sport.

“We will get back on track, there are many games to go, but this defeat was frankly unexpected. Everything went a bit wrong.

“It wasn’t easy to take on this Chievo, as they don’t let you play football. I tried to reinforce the attack with Marco Borriello, but that didn’t pay off either.

“After Chievo’s second goal, we seemed to almost give up. We had reacted well to the first goal and perhaps the result is harsh.”
