Goalscorer Mimmo Criscito admits “it was all much easier” for Zenit after Torino went down to 10 men.

The Russians secured a 2-0 first leg victory in the Europa League Round of 16.

“I am happy for the goal, but above all pleased with the win,” Italy international Criscito told Mediaset Premium.

“We were meeting a Torino side in great shape, but it was all much easier after Marco Benassi was sent off just 30 minutes in.

“We were meeting a Torino side in great shape, but it was all much easier after Marco Benassi was sent off just 30 minutes in.

“We have players of great quality, so it’s a shame we were unable to score a third goal. We won’t go to Turin in order to defend, as we know playing ball to feet is our real strength. We pressed them constantly and that was the key to this win.

“The club invested heavily to do well in the Champions League. We didn’t get through the group stage, so now we want to go all the way in another competition with great teams.”

Criscito was asked whether he’d like a return to Serie A football.

“I am happy here, I’ve been here for four years and we’re discussing a contract renewal. It’s normal that I miss Italy, but I am happy to be here.”
