“Lazio deserved their victory and on the field proved they are the form team in Serie A right now,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.
“My lads gave their all, it’s a heavy slip-up, but one that can happen when you play every three days. Inevitably we’re going to pay something for that. We have players who really ought to rest.
“When you lose this heavily it’s too easy to look for scapegoats. We have to analyse the mistakes everyone made.
“We lost deservedly, even if at the start of the second half we were playing harmoniously and had chances to draw level.
“Now we must give more in the next few games to make up lost ground, because I remain convinced that Fiorentina are not inferior to Lazio.
“It’s also true to say the Biancocelesti have the advantage in the race for a Champions League spot because they are not playing in Europe.
“Unfortunately, we faced the best teams one after another, so inevitably that takes a lot out of you.”
