Andrea Mandorlini felt Verona “deserved the point” in their last-gasp 2-2 draw away to Milan.

Hellas had taken the lead at San Siro, gone 2-1 down and snatched an equaliser at the 95th minute with super-sub Nico Lopez.

“We are happy with the result. We wanted points, we played well and overall didn’t deserve to lose, so it’s the right result,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Nico is very fast and can really break the balance in a game coming off the bench. He’s never scored five goals in his career, so this is a great season for him.

“Not losing at San Siro is something to be proud of for our club. We deserved the point. I was sent off because we conceded with two players down injured, so I protested and it was a moment of agitation.

“I am happy to be sent off if we get a point out of it! The thing I really didn’t like was the way we lost our identity before finding it again in the last six or seven minutes. We had been too predictable and stopped playing our football.

“We got five points from three very difficult matches, so we’re happy.”

Mandorlini might say that, but is defeating Milan at San Siro really such an achievement now?

“At this moment of the season Milan aren’t sharp, so that influences the psychological approach to the game. You could see Milan were closed up and fearful, but they still have talented players and were dangerous on the counter.

“Verona hadn’t picked up a point here in 15 years, which says it all about how difficult this fixture is.

“I think the victory at Cagliari last week took a psychological weight off our shoulders, so we came here with less pressure.

“We have some limitations still, but have improved recently and have more difficult games coming up.”

Jacopo Sala was picked as right-back and impressed in that new role.

“On Sunday he was a wide striker against Cagliari, today he was a right-back. He’s young, can turn the game around with pace and good feet. He deserves all the compliments he’s receiving.”
