Play had to be halted for 15 minutes when supporters in Rotterdam threw numerous objects, including an inflatable banana at Gervinho and a lighter that whizzed inches past the referee.

“It was only right they suspended play, as we could’ve opened a shop with all the objects that were thrown from the stands,” Garcia told Mediaset after a 2-1 win.

“In any case, the victory was deserved. It was difficult to come here and win in Holland, but we managed it thanks to our style of football.

“The lads gave their all, putting great intensity and hunger on to the pitch. We did well to score straight after conceding the equaliser, even if we then went too deep.

“I compliment the players, as they followed our game plan to the letter. We won here by rediscovering the Roma style of football.

“Is this the turning point for our season? We’ll see. I am satisfied with the performance. Now we need to find the right consistency.”
