Gianfranco Zola said the only difference between Cagliari and Inter was “they took more of their chances.”

The Sardinians fought back late on, but were unable to turn the situation around in a 2-1 defeat.

“There are above all many regrets for the chances we created when 1-0 down. We certainly could’ve done better.

“Inter were strong in the first half, but because of our goalkeeper and their finishing, those scoring opportunities were not converted.

“Ultimately they took more of their chances than we did and that was the difference between the two teams.”

Samuele Longo got one back, with help from the woodwork and Juan Pablo Carrizo.

“Longo came off the bench and really changed the face of the game. He held the ball up, invited teammates forward and scored a goal too, so I am very happy for him.

“His confidence was hit by the lack of a goal, but his characteristics are unique in this squad. His physicality is very important for the team, as the other strikers are more rapid.”

January signing Paul-Jose M’Poku was again impressive in attack.

“Today he showed great character and quality. It is important for us to have players with a strong mentality and we are happy with this.

“We certainly need to improve at the back. We tried to work on it in training and I was pretty happy with the way we were defending in the first half, but in football it’s often tough to find the right balance.

“We will do better and were also unfortunate to face a side that was in great form.”

Zola of course had huge success during Parma’s heyday, so how does he feel about their current predicament?

“I am very close to Parma and there are still many people who I knew from my time there. It’s an unpleasant situation and I hope they can find a solution.

“The club, the city and the players do not deserve a situation like this.”
