“At this moment the priority is to give Milan back their own identity and style of football,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“I saw some good things against Parma and Juventus. I realise it’s not easy to ask Milan fans for more patience, as they’ve shown so much already, but hopefully tomorrow’s game will be a launching pad for a strong second half to the season.

“Can we qualify for Europe? I don’t think it’s right to look at the table now. We should find our confidence and at the end of the season see where we are. If we were able to do so well before Christmas, I don’t see why we shouldn’t manage it again.”

Empoli held Milan to a 2-2 draw back in September and had taken a 2-0 lead at the Castellani.

“You can only beat Empoli by putting in a great performance. They have always played very well and Maurizio Sarri deserves all the praise he’s been receiving, but we cannot afford to leave more points by the wayside and will do everything to win.”

Nigel de Jong returns from injury and Mattia Destro is available after his ban against Juventus, but Sulley Muntari joins the absentee list.

“Sulley has a muscular problem. Nigel is doing alright, so if he wakes up feeling good tomorrow, then he will play. Alessio Cerci had a knee issue this week, so he’ll be on the bench and I’ll try to make the most of him for the last half-hour.

“Destro has a wonderful attitude and trains with intensity. I don’t want to put too much responsibility on his shoulders. I wanted Mattia here and I believe in him. Having players like Cerci, Honda, Menez and Bonaventura, we must give Destro the service to score.

“We have two systems, the 4-3-3 or the 4-4-2. Clearly if I chose to play Menez as a centre-forward, the 4-4-2 would be ideal.

“I want the team to play good football. If we do that, then a result is more likely to come along too. This is the most difficult match of the next four in our fixture list, so we need the right intensity.”

President Silvio Berlusconi visited the squad on Friday and Inzaghi thanked the club for resisting calls to sack him.

“Anyone who plays for Milan cannot lack motivation. When you wear the Milan jersey, you must give everything to keep hold of it.

“Berlusconi wants us to get back to winning ways and is aware of our difficulties. He is very intelligent, so expects more in our good moments and stays close to you when things go wrong.

“We should be fired up and angry at our position in the table. The fans and the club know who I am and I think they trust me.

“When results do not arrive, obviously I am sad that the players are blamed. I am strong and can fight against anyone and everything, but I see how hard the players work and want the applause they deserve.

“I hope the crowd will be encouraging tomorrow. At the final whistle we’ll be ready for whatever reaction they have – we’ll take the jeers if we lose and applause if we win.”
