Pippo Inzaghi insists Milan “don’t need to change everything” after defeat to Lazio and forgave Philippe Mexes.

“It was a bad performance, but the lads gave their all and certainly didn’t hold back. The game had started on the right track when we took the lead, but struggled under pressure from Lazio,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“At these moments we just have to keep working and look ahead to the next game, knowing we’ll play Lazio again on Tuesday in the Coppa Italia.
“I believe this team can get back to playing better, the way we did up until a month ago. For three or four games we haven’t done well, but we have to try and get these players giving their best.
“It’s easy to say now we should change everything. We should change some things, so we’ll analyse the game, watch it back over and see what needs tweaking.
“A few weeks ago we were challenging on a par with Roma and Napoli, so I cannot think that this is the real Milan.
“I think one problem is that we have many players coming back from long-term injuries, so they lack consistency, but we shouldn’t look for alibis.”
Inzaghi was asked whether the team was still behind him.
“If a Coach thought he was the problem, then he’d resign. The team follows me, it’s not enough right now, but there’s a long season ahead of us and we can get into the Coppa Italia semi-final.
“I haven’t heard from the President, but there’s little to be said. We all know that we must continue working and return to the team we were only a month ago. I knew this wouldn’t be an easy situation, as there were two Coaches last season.
“Perhaps we gave a sense of false hope with three really good months, but can see this as a starting point to rebuild our campaign.”
Milan had only two shots on goal this evening compared to Lazio’s 18, a trend that has been increasing over recent weeks.
“I think throwing everything we’ve done so far out the window isn’t going to help. The team is visibly frightened now, as we seem to get scared when going in front and once we conceded the second goal we started playing better.”
Mexes was sent off and then lost his mind completely, putting Stefano Mauri in a chokehold.
“Philippe apologised. He was provoked and it’s a shame as he will be suspended, but he was the first to apologise and recognise it was a terrible gesture.”
