Gianfranco Zola said match-winner Duje Cop “impressed everyone” after Cagliari beat Sassuolo 2-1.

The new signing was on target with a cushioned volley for a result that could well take them out of the relegation zone.

“We did pretty well, but we can improve a great deal and we will do,” Zola told Sky Sport Italia.

“Cop impressed everyone from his very first day. The fact he scored today is not a coincidence.

“At this moment it is fundamental that our strike force works, even if the team is still lacking confidence. Everyone is contributing to these results and we hope to continue like this.

“There’s a lot of heart now and the organisation will come later. It was important to win today and after the equaliser we did well to immediately go back in front.”

Cagliari have changed since Zola took over from Zdenek Zeman during the Christmas break, but he remains modest.

“We won’t take credit for something we didn’t do. The lads are the protagonists. We simply tried to give some input and balance to the side.”
