“We are ambitious and doing well in the derby would mean adding something extra to our campaign,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Expect to see the same mentality that allowed us to reach our current position in the table. We want to maintain it for the rest of the season. We have strengths and weaknesses, so naturally must try to make the most of our strengths.”

Pioli could be forced into some tactical changes after Senad Lulic was suspended.

“With the players at my disposal, I can field a balanced side. What counts is the approach and the desire to take control of the game.

“Will this require more heart than head? Both are decisive in every game. Talent is not enough, as we need heart and effort, thankfully characteristics that we have already. In order to beat an opponent like Roma, we must play at our best.

“The people of Rome experience the derby differently. From my first day here the Lazio fans let me know what the derby means. It is exciting, wonderful and I am happy to experience it with the players and fans.

“Before kick-off I will repeat to the squad what it means to play for Lazio. We always tried to play in order to win and we’ll do the same tomorrow.”

Lazio give away a surprising number of free kicks, so could that aggression go too far in a derby situation?

“We must keep our heads and remain sharp. It’s true we are fuelled by aggression, but there are zones on the field where we need to be more careful. Giving away free kicks near the penalty area can become dangerous. We must read the situations.

“I’ve been very happy with the week in training, as I saw a mix between tension and concentration. Would we be happy with a draw? No. Our mentality is to win every game.

“There will be moments in the match where we’ll need to suffer under pressure and fight hard. It’s important to be a team in those difficult moments.

“Who has more to lose? Both teams want to win for their objectives. There is no difference between us.”

It remains to be seen whether Miroslav Klose will start in attack or Filip Djordjevic.

“Both are in good shape and I’m happy to have a choice between such strong strikers. I consider the starters to be very important, but substitutes are also fundamental. I have faith in my forwards.”
