Mauro Icardi reveals he “could’ve joined Real Madrid,” why he quit Barcelona and considering Inter “a top club.”

The former Sampdoria striker spoke to Futbolista Life about his career so far just a month before his 22nd birthday.

“I am happy in Milan, as I adapted well to the city and to Inter. Without doubt having so many Argentines in the squad helped, although there are fewer of them around this year.

The former Sampdoria striker spoke to Futbolista Life about his career so far just a month before his 22nd birthday.

“I am happy in Milan, as I adapted well to the city and to Inter. Without doubt having so many Argentines in the squad helped, although there are fewer of them around this year.

“I chose Inter because they are a top club and am truly happy with my decision. They did everything to get me here.

“Sampdoria was my launch pad into the football that matters. I still have many friends there and know they consider me a good person.”

Icardi is from Argentina, but his family moved to the Canary Islands when he was nine years old and he joined the Barcelona youth academy.

“Real Madrid scouts were talking to my parents, so I could’ve joined them, but at that time I made the choice out of my personal affinity with Barcelona.

“I was certain that I wanted to grow and evolve at Barça, but I left because the system would not have facilitated my move into the first team. We made a decision and in the end the facts prove I was right.

“I learned to play football at La Masia and have many great memories of the place. Would I return to Spain? Right now I am thinking only of Inter and growing with this team to achieve my objectives.”
