Roma defender Leandro Castan will be able to head the ball in three months’ time after undergoing brain surgery.

The Brazilian went under the knife on December 3 to remove a cavernoma – an abnormal cluster of blood vessels that were giving him serious dizzy spells and affecting his balance.

“He is doing well and living a normal life. His convalescence will last for another month to six weeks,” Professor Giulio Maira told Il Messaggero newspaper.

“He can move with co-ordination and balance. He has no dizziness or other issues. He can resume some sport, but very slowly, so for now just an exercise bike and a treadmill.

“If all goes well, he can start heading the ball in three months’ time.”

It does not look as if Castan will be able to play again until next season at the earliest.

“He will be fully recovered next term, better than ever! I told him to go slowly, so he can run without pushing too hard. For a few months he will need some very delicate training separately, but his co-ordination and balance are intact, so it’ll be easier for him to get back in shape.

“Besides, Castan remains a real warrior!”

Professor Maira also confirmed that Castan needed the surgery to salvage his career.

“It’s true, his balance would’ve been compromised without the operation. After all, the first symptoms of a cavernoma are dizzy spells. It’s impossible to play football if you feel as if you’re sea-sick.

“We removed the cavernoma, which had bled, so now he and the fans just need to be patient.”
