Vincenzo Montella admits Fiorentina wasted “an important opportunity” to close on third place with their Empoli draw.

“It was certainly an important opportunity and we should’ve won, but Empoli fought hard to the end and we even risked defeat on the counter,” the Viola Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The lads gave their all and it was a very entertaining derby. It’s a shame about the result, but it’s fair enough.”

Empoli equalised on a corner and confirmed their status as set-piece specialists.

“There was too much space between defenders and that shouldn’t have been the case. It was a mistake in the initial positioning.

“We are missing that moment of magic to unlock games. I think again today we clearly had more possession and better chances, but Empoli are one of the most organised sides in Serie A.

“We struggle more on home turf against defensive teams and the only way to make the domination count is to score goals, otherwise you’re left open.”

Mario Gomez has scored just one goal in eight months and in this game was denied by the woodwork.

“He was very unlucky again today. This was the performance overall that we were looking for, but in terms of finishing we expected goals and he was awfully close today. Evidently 2014 wasn’t a lucky year for him, but we hope for better in 2015.

“The President said ‘Montella wants a touch-up.’ I hope he was referring to the transfer market and not my nose! We have too many players in the squad, but also need to fill the gaps. Giovinco? He’s too expensive for us.”
