Rudi Garcia said Roma “made the most of this opportunity” to beat Genoa and go within a point of Juventus.

Today’s 1-0 win at Marassi and Juve’s 1-1 draw with Sampdoria saw the gap at the top closed to just one point.

“We made the most of this opportunity to go within a point of Juve. We didn’t take it last week, but learned from that experience,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“It is always tough to win at Genoa and will be for any other team that plays here. We had so many chances in the second half to double our advantage and relax, but 10 men can still be very dangerous on set plays.

“Genoa went very, very close to an equaliser on that late corner, even if it wasn’t a corner.”

Adem Ljajic saw his penalty saved by substitute goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna on his Serie A debut, but Garcia had an interesting twist on Mattia Perin’s dismissal.

“You can argue it wasn’t a red card, but then if Perin had stayed on the field we might’ve won 1-0 with Ljajic converting the penalty!”

Garcia surprised by dropping Francesco Totti and Mattia Destro to use Gervinho as a centre-forward.

“We knew it was possible to make the most of our striker’s pace, as this Genoa defence lacks a bit of pace. They have an usual approach, almost man-marking, so if Gervinho gets past his man then it opens up interesting spaces.

“All my players know they are important and will have their chance. I am trying to make the most of those in good form at this moment and how we can tactically cause problems for our opponents.

“I expect Nainggolan to always play like that! He scored a goal, earned a penalty, but was also at the centre of the play, both attacking and defending.

“At times we play at the same level as last season, at times we don’t, as we have a game every three days and can lack energy. All the teams who played in Europe this season have fewer points than last term, but we are close.”
