Stefano Pioli admired Lazio’s “tactical maturity” in patiently breaking down Atalanta for a 3-0 win.

It had reached half-time still on 0-0, but the Aquile transformed the game in the second period with a Stefano Mauri brace and Senad Lulic diving header.

“We played with determination and intelligence, showing tactical maturity,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

“We should’ve been more precise in the first half and make more of the wings. In all honesty, we wanted to start aggressive, but got better as the game went on and became sharper, especially when running into space.

“The important thing is that the team works as a solid unit. Today the full-backs pushed forward a lot and we can improve that further.”

Mauri is Lazio’s top scorer now with six goals in 10 games, despite being the wide point of a trident.

“In Italian football, it’s not good to give opponents a reference point in attack. We need time to vary, but the lads seek movement, have fun with their football and are improving tactically,” continued Pioli.

“Mauri is a very intelligent player, one of the best at controlling free zones on the field and giving his teammates more options in possession.”

The Biancocelesti have temporarily climbed to joint third place, awaiting tomorrow’s games JuventusSampdoria, GenoaRoma and MilanNapoli.
