Fiorentina Coach Vincenzo Montella hopes Roma win in the Champions League tonight – so the Viola don’t risk playing Manchester City.

A victory for the Giallorossi would see City finish bottom of Group E, but other results could yet see the English club in the Europa League, where they could meet Fiorentina who have already qualified for the Last 32.

“It would be nice to see them [Roma] in the second round and Manchester City fourth,” Montella admitted in a Press conference ahead of the Europa League game against Dinamo Minsk.

“That would be good for us. We need luck in the draw, because in the second phase the teams are around the same level.

“You always get good experience from the first stage, which you can learn from.

“We’ll see how we compare [with teams from the Champions League] if and when the time comes, it’s premature to talk about it now.”

Montella’s men are already assured of progressing as group winners, and Montella says he will use the game as an opportunity to assess some fringe players.

“Tomorrow we have a chance to assess those who have played a little bit less.

“There’s nothing riding on it, so there will be less adrenaline and I expect it to be more difficult. So I think I can learn a lot about my team in that sense.

“Cuadrado will be be suspended for the Cesena game, so it’s likely he’ll play. Ilicic and Marin could be on the field tomorrow.

“Did Ilicic hand in a transfer request? No, that’s not true.

“He’s just going through a particular moment where’s he’s played less, because the squad has found a good balance.

“He’s definitely not a player we want to sell, we paid a lot for him [a reported €9m] because he has great value.”
