Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez has defended his goalscoring record for the Viola and says he’ll be back to his best soon.

The German hadn’t scored for 259 days before ending his drought in a 4-0 win over Cagliari on November 30.

The former Bayern Munich man has struggled with injury since moving to Florence, playing just 17 games in two seasons and scoring four goals, but the 29-year-old defends his record.

“There’s been talk of me going 259 days without a goal,” Gomez explained to Kicker.

“But nobody considered that 200 of those days elapsed between injuries and pre-season. The news had become my goal drought, but the reasons for it didn’t matter.

“As players we’re very privileged, but we’re treated as showmen, not as men. I’ve never been out for so long in my career.

“I even bought a ping-pong table to try and get some of the adrenaline from sports that I was missing so much, but I had to play sitting down because of the pain in my knee.

“When I came back I was very restless, then the criticism for the lack of a goal didn’t help. I think in this kind of situation it’s easier for defenders because there isn’t as much pressure.

“I’ve often had bad games in my career but then been treated like a king because I scored.

“I had a chance to score against Cagliari, and I wanted to kick it so hard that the goalkeeper would go into the net with the ball. I did it wrong and the ball went into the stands.

“Then I thought about Jon Dahl Tomasson. I played with him at Stuttgart, and he was an example for me. He always went for accuracy, not power.

“So I got a goal, and it was pure liberation. I needed it after a season in which all my aims were unfulfilled, from the season in Italy to the World Cup.

“Now I’m fit, and that’s good.

“I’m not scared of challenges which could hurt my knee. I don’t feel any pain.

“Soon I’ll be back on top form, but it can’t be done overnight.”
