“Milan and Inter will get back to the top, but they have to start from this derby, which is worth a lot more than three points. It’s the breakthrough moment for both clubs,” Sheva told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“There used to be absolute silence on the team bus when we were travelling to the stadium ahead of the derby. At Milanello you could hear a pin drop.

“We respected Inter, just like Roma or Juventus. Milan and Italy are my home, so I always happily return and I get the same feelings. I always felt appreciated there, even by the Inter fans.

“This is a time of crisis, but the fascination around the Milan derby remains even now.”

There is a new wild card in the derby deck, as Roberto Mancini replaced Walter Mazzarri, returning after six years away from the Inter bench.

“Mancini is an important Coach accustomed to big games, as he experienced so many both as a player and a tactician.

“The change of Coach can create a new atmosphere within a team. It’s a cliché, but it also happens to be true.

“Inzaghi is enthusiastic and agitated, always in movement, just as he was on the pitch as a player. He doesn’t have Mancini’s experience, but he does bring grit and freshness.”

Shevchenko was often decisive for Milan in the derby, so who does he expect to make the difference tomorrow night?

“I expect a lot more from Torres and I know he can give more. I faced him as an opponent in England, he’s a great striker. I believe Torres has more to give and his story isn’t finished.

“Besides, Milan have other good forwards like Menez and El Shaarawy.”
