Tomorrow’s Italy-Albania was organised to raise funds for the city, but Genoa President Enrico Preziosi insists it is “inopportune.”

The international friendly will be hosted by the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, commonly referred to as Marassi, on Tuesday evening.

It was put together in Genoa to raise funds for those affected by devastating floods in the city, but the torrential rain returned over the last few days, once again filling the streets with water and mud.

“It is inopportune to play and there just isn’t the right atmosphere,” said Genoa President Preziosi.

“We cannot distract people from what happened with a football match. It will not help to cancel out the disaster that struck our city.”

There have been several deaths in northern Italy and particularly the Liguria region due to the floods.

The FIGC confirmed it had offered to cancel the friendly match when torrential rain returned over the weekend, but the local authorities gave the all-clear.
