Napoli and Belgium winger Dries Mertens remains in doubt for Sunday’s Serie A match against Cagliari.

He was knocked unconscious by a clash of heads with George Williams during a 0-0 draw against Wales last night.

Tests have shown no serious damage, but Mertens is still being kept in hospital for observation in Brussels.

“I spoke to the medical staff at Napoli and their Coach Benitez,” said Belgian doctor Kris van Crombrugge.

“Dries Mertens should be back in shape for next week’s game.”

However, he was diagnosed with concussion and it’s reported the Napoli staff want to give him a thorough check-up before he is allowed to resume training.

There are even rumours Mertens could make the journey back from Brussels to Naples by train to avoid the risks of flying with a head injury.

The Partenopei are already short on players in his position against Cagliari, as Lorenzo Insigne was ruled out for five months by a knee ligament injury.
