“I am pleased this is the venue, as it is my stadium,” the Inter midfielder told Rai Sport.

“This is a very important game for Croatia and we want to do well against Italy. If the Italians say we are favourites, then in Croatia they say Italy are the favourites, because they have excellent players and a great Coach.

“Our national team has always had a lot of quality in every area. We are really focusing on Euro 2016.”

While Kovacic has been away on international duty, Inter sacked Coach Walter Mazzarri to bring in Roberto Mancini.

“He said I’ll have a bright future? I thank him for that, they are kind words. I will always thank Mazzarri for what he did at Inter.”
