Ex-Inter President Massimo Moratti is “sorry for Walter Mazzarri,” but hiring Roberto Mancini was “necessary.”

Moratti resigned as Honorary President last month, reportedly due to his disagreement with patron Erick Thohir over whether to sack Mazzarri.

“I’m sorry for Mazzarri, who certainly gave his all to do well,” Moratti told Sky Sport Italia.

“I am happy for Mancini and hope for the best. He is a great Coach, a hard worker and that is what is necessary right now.”

Moratti was asked whether Mazzarri’s dismissal had become inevitable.

“You’d have to ask Thohir how he reached this point, but that is a question for the club.”

It was Moratti who fired Mancini in May 2008, just days after winning the Scudetto, to bring in Jose Mourinho.

Mancini had originally announced his resignation in March following a Champions League elimination, then was talked into taking back his decision.

In his first tenure at San Siro, Mancini won three Scudetti (albeit one handed to him by the authorities in the Calciopoli scandal when it was stripped from Juventus), two editions of the Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups.
