The England Under-21 international is out of contract at the end of the season, and so far no renewal for him to stay at the Stadium of Light has been forthcoming.

Whilst updating Calciomercato.it on Ashley Cole’s acclimatisation to life in Rome, agent David Manasseh was asked about speculation linking another one of his clients with a move to the other side of the Italian capital.

“I can’t confirm Lazio’s interest because I personally haven’t been in contact with them,” Wickham’s representative reflected.

“We’ve had to comply with FIFA regulations, which requires us to wait until February 1.

“Renewal or sale in January? These are the choices that belong to Sunderland. All I can say is that Connor is doing fine with the Black Cats.

“Would he like to play in Serie A? All options are open. We won’t rule out anything.”

Wickham played a key role in Sunderland’s survival bid last season, scoring five goals in the Black Cats’ final six matches of the Premier League campaign.
