Enrico Chiesa says that Mario Gomez will soon hit form for Fiorentina if his teammates are willing to help.

The German striker was back in the starting XI last night for the Viola, the first time since September 21.

However, whilst the club booked their place in the Last 32 of the Europa League with the draw achieved against PAOK, Gomez notably missed more than one chance.

“It’s not easy to hit form for a player like Gomez because his physique is heavy and you need a bit more patience,” former Fiorentina man Chiesa has defended to Tuttomercatoweb.

“Vincenzo Montella has also reiterated this – only by playing he can find his form again.

“In my opinion, it’s positive that his teammates are selfless and pass to him the ball even in front of goal because they perfectly know that if he can make the breakthrough, he can make the difference.”

Whilst Gomez is returning to full fitness, Fiorentina’s injury list is no shorter, with strikers Giuseppe Rossi still out of contention and Federico Bernardeschi having to spend the next five months on the sidelines too.

“Fiorentina are a team that create much with their play, but then they have problems when it comes to finish.

“In the Europa League it’s never easy to play because opponents have understood the team’s quality and so they all sit back and defend, making it increasingly difficult for their strikers to score.

“If players like who are struggling to recover like Mario Gomez and Borja Valero return to shape, I think that that they can manage to finish better, and then they’ll be fine.”

Fiorentina host Napoli at the weekend with both teams having played out their respective duties in the Europa League last night, but Chiesa reckons it will be tricky to make a prediction.

“It depends on what the two teams’ physical condition will be after yesterday’s game. Sundays are always a question mark when you play midweek.

“But Napoli have a stellar strike-force with not only Gonzalo Higuain and Lorenzo Insigne at their disposal, but also Dries Mertens and others that can make the difference, like top scorer Jose Callejon. If they feel well, they can be devastating.”
