Gigi Buffon took responsibility for the Olympiacos equaliser, but said the new Juventus system is “more European.”

The equaliser arrived from a corner that Buffon gave by fumbling a cross, though Juve eventually won 3-2.

“The ball went a bit longer than I thought, so I decided to flick it on rather than risk the catch in those wet conditions. I thought it was ‘only a corner,’ but then it proved important!” Buffon told Sky Sport Italia.

“This victory was more than deserved, as we conceded on two set plays and it would’ve been too harsh a punishment for us considering how many chances we created over the two legs.

“There was certainly the possibility that a lack of confidence would hit us, but in my heart I hoped we’d be able to achieve this sporting miracle. It was something luck owed us considering how we played over the two games.

“The psychological aspect is important in these situations. If you start strong, take the lead and after three minutes they equalise, it’s normal that something can creep into your mind in terms of conviction.

“We did well in my view to stay in the game and not allow Olympiacos anything more, then in the second half we started creating chances again. Even when going 2-1 down, we continued along that path and in the end got the deserved result.”

Juventus started with four at the back for the first time this season and Buffon was impressed.

“I think the defenders played a great game, as we only allowed weak efforts from distance and set plays. We defended well, organised the forward play in a slightly different way to usual, but it was closer to a European style.

“You can risk the one-on-one with defenders, but with players like ours I think we need to take more risks and accept those situations.”
