Former Roma full-back Vincent Candela believes Ashley Cole should face Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, despite a horror showing in the home tie.

Cole was substituted at half-time in the Olimpico two weeks ago, with the Giallorossi 5-0 down to the German champions by that stage.

The Englishman has an ally though in Candela, who played at left-back for the Giallorossi over 200 times in an eight-year spell in the capital.

“For me, they should play Cole [against Bayern],” the Frenchman has told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He has experience, we’re talking about a player who has been one of the best in the world.

“Iosif Cholevas? He’s good, he takes the game on, but if Cole is confident the spot has to be his.

“The home defeat to Bayern wasn’t just his fault, but he was jumped on, the others should have doubled up [on Arjen Robben].

“Garcia will make his choices, but I can tell you, as a player it’s important to have a Coach who says ‘that spot is yours because you’re the best, and you give me 300 per cent every game’.

“In my Roma days, I knew that spot was mine, and I knew I had a lot of responsibility. The responsibility made me feel even more important.

“If this happens with Cole he’ll be reborn.”
