Zdenek Zeman accused Cagliari of ‘gifting’ the first half of their 4-2 defeat to Lazio but praised them for showing the character.

The Rossoblu fell 3-0 down within the first half-hour on Monday night, but they were much improved after the break, as they pegged the Aquile back to 3-2.

The Coach was hopeful that his side could bring forward the positive facets of their play instead of slumbering through the motions.

“We gifted [Lazio] the first half. You could see that my players are used to going to bed at nine,” Zeman told reporters on Monday.

“In the second half, we woke up, and through Ibarbo, we immediately got ourselves back to 3-2. Then the red card complicated our plans to come back, but we tried until the end.

“We were too passive in the first half and repeated the same mistakes we made against Roma. There was too much distance between our midfield and attack. We hope to be more active in our next game.”

On the topic of his continued faith in young players and Victor Ibarbo’s straight red card, Zeman said: “I have many young talents, and they can all get to the top, depending on what I can transmit to them and their attitudes.

“I have, I think, 17 Under-23s in my squad. I hope they can show their value.

“The red card? Lulic held him back and Ibarbo tried to break free, maybe a little too blatantly.”
