Stefano Pioli hailed his Lazio players for producing an ‘almost-perfect’ first-half display during their 4-2 victory over Cagliari on Monday.

The Aquile were out of sight by as early as the 26th minute thanks to three quick-fire goals, and although they were eventually forced to make hard work of the result, the Coach was confident that his players were on the right track towards qualifying for Europe next season.

“This week [in training], we tried out new things and did well to put them into practice,” Pioli told reporters after the match.

“We were almost perfect in the first half, but as we dropped in level we fell into difficulty.

“We know that we can always improve, even when we play well, because as soon as we dropped just five per cent, we conceded two goals.

“Our position? I don’t look at it. We will make initial assessments in January. Our goal is to return to Europe, but everything is accomplished in stages. We’re thinking game by game.”
