The Samp midfielder doesn’t think that the Blucerchiati will feel too reverent against their stronger opponents, especially as this is a duel between third and second in Serie A.

“We’ll play an open game otherwise Mihajlovic will beat us up!” Palombo told Teleradiostereo.

“Jokes aside, we intend to follow the path we have embarked so far. I think that we can draw some confidence from this mentality and this style of play.

“Obviously there are stronger opponents and situations can change in every single game and one must be able to adapt and read situations.”

Samp already suffered the wrath of Roma seven years ago when Spalletti’s side demolished the Blucerchiati 4-0 after losing 7-1 to Manchester United in the Champions League.

But Palombo thinks the Genoese side will work hard to avoid a repeat, especially as they are unbeaten so far this season.

“Obviously I expect Roma players to be even angrier after their defeat in the Champions League. But I also think Roma’s game against Bayern was just a coincidence – I don’t think they’ll experience another game like that.

“We all know their qualities and on Tuesday I think that they actually faced the strongest team in the world.

“And regardless of the result against Bayern, it would have been a very difficult game for us anyway. We’ll have to stay beware.

“We’ll have to run a lot against Roma and put in a good shift. But the most important thing will be playing with the right frame of mind.”

The game against the Romans will see many faces associated with Giallorossi both in the past and in the present, beginning with Samp President Massimo Ferrero who once was a Roma supporter.

“Ferrero is a very nice character, he nearly makes us die laughing. But I must say that although in public he is lively and playful, when it’s time to be serious, he’s always there.”

Alessio Romagnoli is on loan from Roma and he has become a lynchpin of Doria’s defence this season.

“We already knew Romagnoli and if Rudi Garcia himself had played him even as a full-back, it meant that he had quality.

“I think that in our environment he can grow up well. He is 19 so he must be helped in some circumstances. Both technically and tactically he has really impressed me and you can realize this only when you see him playing every day.”
