Daniele De Rossi said Roma “will pay the fans back for their support” after a 7-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.

“The result is shocking. We must take the positives and learn the lesson from this night, perhaps helping us realise our real dimension,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

“We and the city had been waiting for this match for a long time and it’s a shame we got this result. Seeing the fans applaud us at the end of the game felt like a stab in the heart. The season is long and potentially rich in satisfactions, so we will pay them back for their support.”

It was a remarkable setback, especially considering Roma had won all six home games this season in all competition.

“There is certainly a technical gap, as when you lose 7-1 it cannot be just an issue of mentality. Despite the result, however, I don’t think the difference between us and Bayern is that big. Obviously Bayern are better than 90 per cent of the teams in the world.

“We could’ve done better and I don’t see a single specific reason why we conceded all these goals. It was a combination of situations. There was also a physical difference, but when you get those nights and everything goes your way, it keeps going.

“We’ve experienced games like this against other teams when we had the game sealed after 30 minutes, making our opponents look out of breath. We were on the other side this time.

“Bayern are rapid, all so technically gifted and can keep the ball for 60-90 seconds, so they are really tough to face.”

Roma remain comfortably in second place in Champions League Group E, as Manchester City were held 2-2 by CSKA Moscow.

“Despite this match, I don’t think Bayern are unbeatable. We already got a hammering like this a few years ago, but remember we had beaten Manchester United 2-1 the same year we lost 7-1. It’s a bad night, but we can play the other games.”
