Verona striker Luca Toni believes Bayern Munich are the favourites for their clash with Roma, but the Olimpico crowd could spur the Giallorossi on.

Toni has played for both sides during his career, winning the Bundesliga with the Bavarians in 2008.

“Playing in Rome is difficult for anyone,” the veteran striker has told Sky Sport Italia today, ahead of the sides meeting tomorrow evening in the Champions League.

“There’s so much enthusiasm for the Champions League and the way the team is playing.

“There’s so much enthusiasm for the Champions League and the way the team is playing.

“On paper, Bayern Munich are the favourites, but the red-hot atmosphere could be a plus point for Roma.”

Italian teams have struggled to make an impact on the Champions League since Inter lifted the trophy in 2010, but Toni believes Roma and Juventus could be a force in the competition, even if they aren’t ranked among the favourites.

“I think the favourites are always the same – Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and the English teams.

“However, Roma and Juve could have their say, because they are both great teams.

“No team is favourite for the overall victory. Bayern should certainly make the last four, and it would be nice if they could win another Champions League, but to do so you need luck on your side too.”
