Rudi Garcia believes Roma captain Francesco Totti deserves to win the Champions League, as he reiterates the Scudetto is this year’s target.

Totti has spent 25 years with Roma, both in the youth teams and the senior side, and has won a Serie A title as well as two Coppa Italias.

However, the 38-year-old is yet to taste European glory, but his Coach is eyeing that target down the road.

“This season we’ll win the League, I’m sure of it.” Garcia has told German magazine Kicker.

“The plan is to lead Roma into the European club elite, and even better to win the Champions League with Francesco Totti, he really deserves it after his fantastic career.

“Francesco is the king of Roma, and a unique genius, but he is also humble, selfless and puts the good of Roma before personal records.

“That’s what makes him a world-class player.”

Despite his lofty goals, Garcia admits that this season is probably too soon for his side to compete for the Champions League.

“A League and Champions League double in 2015? No, it’s definitely too soon.

“It would be a huge success just to get through the difficult group in which we were drawn, but the two games with Bayern Munich are a good opportunity for us to see where we stand.”

Garcia also told the magazine about the lack of job security that comes with being a top-level Coach, joking that he always has a bag packed in case he has to leave a club on short notice.

“Being a Coach is a good job, but it’s as fragile as a house of cards.

“Even after a successful season you can be fired, which is what happened to me at Lille. That’s why I always have a bag ready by the door.

“I know how football works. I prefer to live in the present and try to achieve my goals with Roma.”
