Walter Gargano is out for a month with a fractured cheekbone, but the extent of the Napoli midfielder’s injury is emerging.

There was surprise when the Partenopei announced that Gargano would need four weeks off the field due to a fractured cheekbone, as some players return to action with the aid of a protective mask within days.

“After the tests, the situation was immediately clear: a comminuted fracture in several different places, reduced via plaques and screws that should allow a more rapid recovery,” Professor Gianpaolo Tartaro told AreaNapoli.it.

“With the use of a carbon fibre mask we could even see him back on the field in 20 days. It’s down to the medical staff to decide.”

The injury was caused by an accidental collision with Napoli teammate Dries Mertens during training.
“It was truly a very powerful blow. Gargano couldn’t even close his mouth properly. It was far more notable than the trauma suffered by Britos a while back against Juventus.”

Gargano will remain in hospital until tomorrow morning, but hopes to watch the Inter-Napoli match on television on Sunday evening.

“He was very upset, as he especially wanted to play against Inter. He said he was sure he’d have scored.”
